Ensemble Encounters: A Q&A with Stacey McKinnon on Mentoring and Coaching

By: The Ensemble Practice

Earlier this month we hosted our G2 Alumni Meeting and convened our G2 Class 9 in Austin, TX. A key topic during both meetings was around human capital, including employee engagement and coaching and mentoring. We had the chance to sit down with G2 Alum and current G2 Coach, Stacey McKinnon, to discuss this important topic a little further as well as her role in the G2 program.

  1. Why did you decide to participate in the G2 Leadership Institute? And why have you decided to stay connected with the program?
For most Founders, they started this business to take care of clients, not necessarily to run a business. As companies have grown, the need to have “business owners” not only “client owners” has increased, but running an RIA is not necessarily the same as every other business in America. An MBA program might give someone the basics, but financial services is unique, and therefore the “business owner” training needs to be unique, too. This is why I joined the program – because I wanted training that would help me succeed as a leader of an RIA, not just the leader of a business. And I always tell people I am grateful to have learned in the program where there were no stakes, so that I knew what to do when the stakes were high!
  2. How do you view your role as coach and mentor within the G2 program and at Morton Wealth?
Financial advisors can change lives. Most people make money-decisions every day, yet our education system hasn’t prepared us to make those decisions well. This is why the world needs good financial advisors – so that people can better care for their families and loved ones. I decided to be a coach and mentor because I want to continue helping the industry improve, grow, and help more people.
  3. Can you share how a coach or mentor has impacted your career or personal life?
I learn as much from the participants as they learn from me! It is a special responsibility to be able to invest in the lives of others, and I feel grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact as a coach.
  4. Ensemble Extra! What ensemble recently made an impact on you?
The team at Morton makes an impact on me weekly! We have a culture founded on “getting better every day” and it is incredibly motivating to work with people who are driven to make the company, clients, and employees thrive.
